There are three main types of soil. These are clayey, Sandy and loamy soil.
CLAYEY SOIL
These are soils with high proportion of clay.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAYEY SOIL.
1. Particles of clay are very small and fine.2. Clay is slippery when wet and powdery when dry.
3. Clay retains water and mineral salts hence it becomes waterlogged in the rainy season.
4. Clay has very small pore spaces.
5. Clay is mostly acidic.
6. Clayey soil cannot be used for farming.
HOW TO IMPROVE CLAYEY SOIL FOR AGRICULTURE.
1. Clay soil can be made lighter and more fertile by addition of lime and humus.2. The lime breaks up the soil and improves the particle size or texture.
3. Lime also neutralizes the acidity of the soil.
4. Humus is to add air to the soil.
5. Humus also makes the soil lighter.
SANDY SOIL(LIGHT SOIL)
These are soils with large proportion of sand particles.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SANDY SOIL.
1. Particles of sand are large with a lot of people air spaces.2. Sandy is loose and easy to dig or plough.
3. Sandy soil allows water to pass through easily, therefore cannot retain mineral salts.
4. Sandy soil contains little humus.
5. Sandy soil is therefore not fertile for agriculture.
HOW TO IMPROVE SANDY SOIL FOR AGRICULTURE.
1. Sandy soil can be improved fo agriculture by the addition of the humus.2. Humus makes the soil good by reducing porosity and improving water retention.
LOAMY SOIL
Loamy soil is a mixture of sand and clay in roughly equal proportions, together with good proportion of humus.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF LOAMY SOIL.
1. Loamy soil is not sticky when wet.2. It does not become hard when it dry.
3. The particles are not too small and not too large.
4. Loamy soil retains water well without becoming water logged.
5. It contains plant nutrients due to decomposed organic matter in it.
6. It has a light texture which makes it suitable for agricultural purposes.
ASSIGNMENT
