An idiom is a group of words in a fixed order and the meaning of which cannot be derived from the individual words. All the words must be put together for its special meaning to be determined...

Example:
The student wanted to throw dust into our eyes.

The above statement means the student wanted to deceive us.

An idiomatic expression is a word made up of a preposition and a verb with a fixed meaning.

Example:
The rich man has passed on.

The expression 'has passed on' consist of a verb and a preposition. It is, therefore, an idiomatic expression.

 SOME IDIOMS AND THEIR MEANINGS 
1. Go by the book= follow the rules rigidly
2. Have one's heart in one's mouth= be afraid
3. In a nut shell= briefly
4.In black and white= to be written down.
5.Keep one's head above water = stay out of trouble or difficulty
6.Make ends meet= live within one's means
7. Put one's foot down= be firm
8.Take the bull by the horns= to tackle a problem bodly.
9.Thick in the head= stupid
10.To kill the goose that lays the golden egg= to lose a valuable source of income.
