THE MAIN ROLE OR IMPORTANCE OF THE UNO
1. MAINTAINING WORLD PEACE AND SECURITY:The United Nations was established in 1945 "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war" and one of its main purposes is to maintain international peace and security. The Charter of the United Nations gives the Security Council primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.2. SETTLING INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS:Article 2(3) of the UN Chapter states that all Member States have to settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered. ... The methods and procedures of dispute settlement for states also largely apply to non-state actors.
3. RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS: The obligation of States to respect human rights means that they must refrain from interfering with or curtailing the enjoyment of human rights. Their obligation to protect human rights requires them to protect individuals and groups against human rights abuses, including by business enterprises.
4. CARING FOR REFUGEES: Refugees are survivors of a country through war or are people who have run away from their country to escape autocratic government. UNO as an organization made it clear for each country to offer a handy hand to refugees. With this many lives have been saved.
5. PASSAGE OF INTERNATIONAL LAWS:Among the greatest achievements of the United Nations is the development of a body of international law, which is central to promoting economic and social development, as well as to advancing international peace and security. The international law is enshrined in conventions, treaties and standards. Many of the treaties brought about by the United Nations form the basis of the law that governs relations among nations.
6. PROMOTING DEMOCRACY: Promoting democracy, which can also be referred to as democracy assistance, democracy support, or democracy building, is a strand of foreign policy adopted by governments and international organizations that seek to support the spread of democracy as a political system around the world.
