TYPES OF PHRASES PART II



WHAT IS A PHRASE? 
A phrase is a group of related words that does not have a subject and a apredicate. A phrase can also be a group of words that can be represented by one word.
It performs the function of a single part of speech.
Examples
1. is eating(verb phrase)
2.a boy(noun phrase)
3.to his son  (prepositional phrase)
4.that white shirt(adjective phrase)
5.too slowly (adverb phrase)


There are different types of phrases some of which are:


  • Verb phrase
  • Noun phrase
  • Adjective phrase
  • Adverb phrase
  • Prepositional phrase 


Noun phrase shall be our topic of discussion today.....


THE NOUN PHRASE
We have learnt that a noun is a word that is used to refer to a person, an animal,place or thing.

A noun phrase is therefore, a group of words that names a person, a place ,an animal, an idea or any object. We must note that nouns have determiners some of which are, 'a', 'an','the','some' among others. It means these words are followed by nouns.

Examples of noun phrases are:

a boy
the men
an examination
some people

NB:We put the determiners and nouns together as noun phrases


Let's consider  a few sentences containing noun phrases.

1. The boy is sick.

2.I have a beautiful white shirt

3. The formal Minister of  State visited our school.

4. The girl must be promoted to the next class.

EXERCISE 
Underline the noun phrase  in each of the following sentences

1.All human beings should respect one another.

2.Where does the man stay?

3.The computers are being used by the students.

4.The university students are writing their final exams.

5.Do not dissapoint the secretary of the club.

6.A child wakes up and expects his parents to greet him.

7.The youth of today look mean on their traditional culture.

8.Most drivers in the country involve themselves in speeding.

9.A period of two years is too small for university education.

10.The extended family system in Ghana is causing more harm than good.
