BLENDS AND CONSONANT CLUSTER (using consonants blend to build words) BS 3


Consonant blend occur when two different consonant sounds follow each other in a word. For example in the words (black,bread,store) the first two letters are consonants and there are no vowels between them . Thus /bl /, /br/ and /St/ are consonants blends or consonant clusters.

Look at the some possible consonant blends and examples of words in which they occur; both at the initial and final position of words.

1. bl- black, bleak, blame

2. br - break,bread, broom

3. Pl - please, plan,play

4. pr - pray,prey, print

5.sm- smoke, small, smart

6.sn - snake, sneak, snack

7. st - stop,store ,start

8.sp - sport, speak,spy, spend

9.sk - sky,skirt,skip,skill

10.kw - quick, queen, quench

11.gr- grass, great, grow

12 .tr - tree,tray,transport

  Three blends (two)

   1.spr - spray, spread, spring

  2.str - strong, stream, stretch

  3.spl - splash, spleen

  4.scr - scratch, scrap,scream

   Final blends (two)

   1. nd - lend,bend, send

2.st - first,must, fast

3. ft - soft,lift, left

4.vz - lives, halves, shelves

5. ks - box, six, picks

6.ld - old, cold, child

  7.pt - swept, kept, wept

  8.sk - ask,task,desk
