PHRASE PART III


WHAT IS A PHRASE? 
A phrase is a group of related words that does not have a subject and a predicate.  A phrase can also be a group of words that can be represented by one word.
It performs the function of a single part of speech.
Examples
1. is eating(verb phrase)
2.a boy(noun phrase)
3.to his son  (prepositional phrase)
4.that white shirt(adjective phrase)
5.too slowly (adverb phrase)


There are different types of phrases some of which are:


  • Verb phrase
  • Noun phrase
  • Adjective phrase
  • Adverb phrase
  • Prepositional phrase 

Prepositional phrase shall be our topic of discussion today.....


THE PREPOSTIONAL PHRASE
Prepositional phrase is a group of words beginning with a preposition and ending with a noun or pronoun object.

Examples:
1.He gave the book to his son.

In is sentence one , to is a preposition and son which is a noun becomes the object of the preposition to.

Therefore, it is clear that our prepositional phrase in sentence 1 is  to his son

2.Our lecturer came into the  lecture hall.

Let's identify the preposition in the second  sentence ..." into"..

After identifying the preposition into confirm whether it ends with a noun or a pronoun object. It is clear it ends with the noun object" hall "...


Therefore ,our prepositional phrase in sentence 2 is , " *into the lecture hall"* ..



EXERCISE 
Underline the prepositional phrase in the following sentences.

1.He threw stones at the girl.

2.She hid behind the cupboard.

3.We arrived at Winneba early in the morning.

4.He was dedicated to the teachings of the bible.

5.They slept through the whole disturbance.

6.Bonwire is rich in Kente weaving.

7.David Copperfield ,was written by Charles Dickens.

8.Have you gone to the fun-fair yet?

9.We grew maize in the field behind our house.

10.You can learn much about poets from their letters.
