TEDDY BEAR
Theodore Roosevelt, Americas twenty-sixth president, was a big-game hunter.
In the autumn of 1902, Teddy,as he was affectionately called,went bear hunting with some friends.
Luck was against him;He did not kill a single bear.
As Teddy was about to give up the hunt,one of his friends chased a bear club into camp calling,"Teddy, shoot"!
The president lowered his gun.
An expression of pity showed on his face.
Later when asked why he did not shoot the helpless cub,he stated that he could not look in the face of his own kids if he had shot the poor cub.
Back home in Washington DC, president Roosevelt narrated the incident to his cartoonist friend,C.KBerryman, when he came to visit, and they both laughed heartily.
The president soon forgot about the joke, but the cartoonist didn't.
A few weeks after, the bear hunting incident appeared in his newspaper, the Washington Post.
It showed a cartoon of the president pushing away a frightened bear cub.
Teddy bear had become the talk of the town.
Ingenious toy manufacturer's were quick to seize the opportunity, and soon they flooded the market with little stuffed bears-_teddy bear.
