INDEFINITE ARTICLES BS 4&5


The English alphabet is divided into two different sounds. These are vowels and consonants.

THE ALPHABETS
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

The vowels are Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu. The remaining are the consonants.

'A' and 'An' are called indefinite articles. An indefinite article is used before a singular noun that names a person, place or thing that is not specific.

HOW TO USE "A" OR "AN" 
If a word begins with a vowel use "an" before the word .Such a word is always singular.

Examples:

  1. I have an apple in my bag.
  2. I saw an orange on the table. 
  3. An elephant is the biggest animal. 
  4. I have an umbrella.

If a word begins with a consonant use "a".

Examples:

  1. A man came here.
  2. I want a pencil. 
  3. I have a friend called King.
