To multiply two fractions, multiply top numbers ( numerators ) together and bottom numbers (denominators) together, and cancel if possible.
Mixed numbers must first be changed to improper fractions before multiplying.
EXAMPLES
Perform the following operations:
1. 1/3 × 4/5
2. 2 1/3× 1 1/2
SOLUTION
NOTE: Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
1. 1/3×4/5= 4/15
2. 2 1/3× 1 1/2= 7/3× 3/2= 7/2 = 3 1/2.
It is possible to cancel before multiplying.
