SIMILARITIES BETWEEN OSMOSIS AND DIFFUSION
1. Both processes involve a concentration gradient.2. Both processes involve movement of molecules.
WAYS IN WHICH THE PRINCIPLES OF DIFFUSION IS BEEN APPLIED IN OUR DAILY LIFE
1. Air fresheners which are used to mask bad scent(odour) are used on the principle of diffusion.2. Insecticides for killing pest of humans and crops like mosquitoes and locusts work on the principle of diffusion. When it is sprayed, molecules of the insecticide spread from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Any insect that falls within the range of the insecticide spray is killed.
3. Food vendors use the principle of diffusion to sell their products. That is food prepared deliciously has a unique aroma that attracts customers to it. Eg. 'Kelewele', cake, bread and fried rice.
4. Medical officers use the principle of diffusion to treat shock. This is done by injecting chemicals(drugs) into the blood. The chemicals enter the cells and tissues of the body by diffusion.
WAYS IN WHICH PRINCIPLES OF OSMOSIS IS APPLIED IN DAILY LIFE
1. Food like fish, meat and some vegetables are preserved in salt solution. The strong salt solution kills bacteria by draining water from them(by osmosis) before they can cause the food to spoil.2. Fruit juices preserved in concentration from(jams, jellies) do not spoil because of osmosis.
3. Diseases like diarrhea is treated on the principle of osmosis. When patients are given oral rehydration salt(ORS), osmosis occurs and water which would otherwise be removed from the body is reabsorbed into the blood stream.
4. Salt is removed from sea water by placing the sea water in contact with a semi-permeable membrane and then subjecting it to a higher pressure. In the process, water molecules are forced out of the sea water and collecting into a tank. The process is reverse osmosis.
END OF LESSON EXERCISE
Explain why a fresh water fish like tilapia would die if it is placed in sea water.
END OF LESSON ASSIGNMENT
Explain why a plant is likely to wilt or drop if too much of fertilizer is applied.
