HAZARDS AND RISK PART II

EXAMPLES OF HAZARDS ENCOUNTERED IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SCIENCE
1. Exposure to substances that are corrosive.
2. Exposure to inflammable substances like alcohol, petrol, methylated spirit, LPG and others
3. Exposure to toxic or poisonous chemicals in the laboratory.
4. Explosions resulting from chemical reactions which can cause injury if protective clothing like eye goggles, gas mask and gloves are not worn.
5. Exposure to poisonous or toxic gases like hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, carbon monoxide during gas preparation.
6. Exposure to harmful bacteria like salmonella which causes food poisoning.

CAUSES OF HAZARDS ENCOUNTERED IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SCIENCE
1. Poor teaching skills in science.
2. Poor handling of scientific apparatus and equipment in conducting experiment.
3. The use of toxic or poisonous chemicals in conducting experiment.
4. Not adhering strictly to safety rules.
5. Lack of knowledge or information about hazards.
6. Working in unsanitary conditions.

WHY HAZARDS ARE DANGEROUS
Hazards found in any environment or working place are dangerous because they can cause harm to the human body in several ways. Some o which include respiratory diseases from inhaling poisonous and volatile chemicals, burns from gas explosion, cuts from broken glassware, electrical shocks from using faulty electrical gadgets, broken limbs from slipping, and impotency and infertility from ingestion toxic chemicals.

PREVENTION OF HAZARDS
1. By being able to identify and interpret warning and safety signs.
2. By adhering strictly to safety precautions against hazards.
3. By keeping working environment especially laboratory clean.
4. By applying modern teaching skills in science.
5. Proper handling o scientific apparatus and equipment.
6. By installing safety devices like fire alarm and smoke detectors at workplaces.
7. By using alternate and less toxic materials for research.

ASSIGNMENT
Mention five causes of hazard encountered in the teaching and learning of science.
